Looks like its been dead a while. How long has it been dead, do you know?

as @Khriss has said it could be the grey squirrel problem, removing the live tissue, but looks a little more like its been dead a while and now the bark is falling off the tree.

What is happening around the roots? could they have been dug up, or has the tree been sat in a water so the roots  can't breathe and the tree died.

The tree is dead so not too much to do, but hope your mystery does get solved.

Thanks for the reply,

There is no damage to the base of the tree with the main bark still intact,  There has been no excavation anywhere near the root protection zone for this tree and it has only died within the last 12 months.

I was leaning towards sun scorch to be honest.

My main concern is this is a council tree outside a primary school where the kids always keep climbing the tree.....

On doing a QTRA the tree needs to be felled.

I just wanted to understand what had gone wrong with this tree....

I can get more photos if needed
