Adding to my car license but what to get?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm hoping to get there not the tree surgery business within the next couple of months, obviously starting as a groundie to gain experience and so far I've put myself through cs30/31 chipper and grinder courses

I have a post 1997 driving license so do I get the trailer license or go straight for something bigger?

Was thinking class 2 but is that overkill or would it actually be useful for a lot of work?

Just trying to get a feel for what would be more useful to me and I'm putting myself through it all so cost also plays a slight factor

Thanks for any advice you can give

I would have thought getting the trailer licence would be more useful. If you want to get class 2 then go for it but most arb companies round me just want the trailer test. I don't know any that run over 3.5t around me apart from specialist equipment where they usually have a driver/operator for a crane or grab cutter.

Class 2 doesn’t let you tow, which is what most arb firms want/need. You’d also need class 1. If you have this in mind in the future anyway then go for it as opposed to just doing your trailer licence, as that won’t get you any closer to truck driving.

However, if you don’t envisage becoming a Yorkie eating, gayby dwelling, prostitute murdering trucker in the future then just do your towing test!

Hi mate, I've been thinking the same but after I made a few enquiries with driving centres it costs way more to do your class 2, as you need to pay for a medical and theory tests as well as lessons and practical assessment. Also that doesn't give you your trailer licence for a car or 7.5, for that you'd need to do your class 1 which is more money again.

I've gone with just doing my trailer test, as said already anything bigger is pretty specialist so would probably come with a driver.

Hope that helps, good luck 👍

Thanks that all helps

Do you know if doing my trailer license let's you drive up to 7.5 tonnes?

Or is that another separate test?

Ok m guessing trailer license is just for towing up to 3.5 tonnes

7.5 is a separate test like class 2, requires a medical and theory as well so still much more expensive than car + trailer.

So if I remember rightly, car plus trailer test means you can tow up to 3.5 tonne and combined car/van plus trailer is 7 tonne max.

it might take you a year or more to get a test appointment at the present time someone i know waited for nearly a year for the theory test that they passed last week and its towards the end of October for the driving test unless there is a cancelation
