I looked into this but it was a little while ago.
According to the DVSA person I spoke to, although you are not towing if it has a tacho fitted you either need to use it all the time regardless or keep a log book of when you are using the truck and not using the tacho, when I questioned why I was told it was because there would be mileage discrepancies that could be questioned if ever they were checking your charts.
If it was mine I would remove it.

Driven a lorry 2-3 times a week for over 30 years and not once has anybody ever looked at any of my tacho records. The first lorry I drove had just been bought because it had a tacho and they had just been made a legal requirement.

Other driver of the same lorry got pulled with no disc (it was a paper type rather than digi) and even then they didn't know what the rules were (police/VOSA). No charges were brought.

Ours go off and are analysed for infringements,if these infringements are not addressed the operators Olicence could be revoked come audit time or at the very least go from green status to red. Red to DVSA is a guaranteed pull no matter where you go, that needs to be avoided at all costs.

If you qualify for tacho exemption its best to get the form filled in so DVSA know its exempt before you get stopped.

Yours are for a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes mam, under this no operators licence and tacho only when weight exceeds 3.5 tonnes ie towing,

do you use tacho in your transit/ hilux?

Well, requirement over. Went to pick it up today as it was in london so a 3 hour drive each way. It was absolute garbage. Starter was shagged, had a crash on the f/o/s and the f/n/s, the drivers footwell was impressive. There's a plastic strip painted on by ford. Part of it was removed and replaced with underseal. I proded it with a plastic biro and it broke apart with rust. the suspension and drivetrain was rusty as hell, the rear bulkhead was rusty, the weight computer was broken, brake pipes corroded, no service history, wheels rusty and bubbling so they painted them over with hammerite that was dripping off the lug nuts...  I could go on and on. I had an a4 list of issues before I even really got into the back. 

 

2015, 57,000 miles. I guess they dipped it in the ocean before drying it off with salt. I wouldn't be so angry if they didn't make it sound good over the phone. It was a commercial vehicle company too. Feel sorry for the person who buys that POS

Seems to be the case more often than not, I used to think nothing of driving to the other end of the country for a vehicle when I was younger, but I try an stick local nowadays just in case its a lemon, my time seems to be more valuable these days so I'm less inclined to waste a day of it taking a chance on a far flung car!

The only reason I went was because it already had the shortened back and a tool cab so I could have saved good money there on the conversion but it wasn't to be. When I was 12 I started working with a guy who fixed crash repair cars and I learnt a lot from him. Thank god I did, being able to pick up things like panel gaps or little specs of overspray made me look forward into the crash bar which was a little bent up. It also let me into the secret side of the motor trade and what to look for. A bit of black paint that was shinier than other stuff rang alarm bells. If it was a good price it wouldn't be a big deal but it was up for the same price as every other low mileage 15/16 transit so was a massive lemon. I have found one closer now so wish me luck 🤦‍♂️

i recently bought a nice 11 plate Transit crew cab tipper with 71k on it.  I was lucky to buy it from an independent Transit specialist who is based 30 mins. away.  I wanted the older 2.4 TDCI engine rather than the later 2.2.  I was lucky to find a good one locally.
