clearview 500 burning too fiercely

Recommended Posts

I have had a Clearview 500 wood burning stove for some years. Am excellent stove but recently have had brown deposit on right hand side of glass. This presumably because of an airleak round the seal cooling the glass. So I removed door, turned the hinges 180 degrees clockwise to tighten the seals. This at first was great as the now hotter glass burnt off the deposit as it should. However the stove now constantly burns far too hot (480deg+) even if both traps at bottom are closed. Also the flames are not that lovely lazy appearence I am used to but are still vigorous so air is getting in somewhere but where? I will admit that the door latch is now difficult to engage (I have to push the door in agaionst the seals) That might be a factor? Any ideas anyone? thanks. Peter

Did you test the seals all round with a strip of paper before you started adjusting as maybe only one reqired adjusting.

Also did you unwind the door handle one turn out which pushes the seals tighter to the body.

If the handle is now tight, screw it in a turn to loosen it.

But if you didnt adjust the method I suggested, I would return it to the original position and start again

Thanks Slim. I have put hinges back where they were and unsrewed handle one turn. Handle now very tight when engaged. Paper slides out along top left edge only so will try that for the next burn.

So that is the edge above the handle end of the door? If the handle is tight to close I would expect the top edge above it to be a good seal. Have you ever replaced the rope seal, maybe it’s time and then reset the hinges/ handle so the seal just seals without compressing it too much to give scope for ajustements as it beds in over time?
