Sealing the ends of big sticks while in storage

I've always sealed the ends of any freshly milled timber with 3 coats of oil based paint - but that has been timber milled by someone else.

 

I am wondering if is worthwhile sealing the ends of big sticks we bring back to stockpile as they may sit here for a year before they are milled?

Yes they all should be sealed asap to stop end grain splitting.I use SPR  waterproofer  x 3 coats

Yes agreed - but at Timber Auctions it is a rare sight to see any attempt at sealing !

Is that clear? Used paint on beech, but didn't know it had to be 3 coats and it split.

I've had a look at this- the only thing that's coming when I google is a waterproofing admixture- is that right?
