Tractor starting problem

sounds a bit like a bad earth had the same prob with a friends john deere last week you could try connecting a jump lead on the battery earth terminal and then clipping it onto the engine block then try to start it

could try a jump lead straight on to the strater motor from somthing with a gud strong battery nd if its still lazy grt the starter motor off nd tested

Sounds like the overheating cable is the first thing to tackle..as well as poor connections, it might be an internal fault with the cable, especially if it's old. Copper work hardens, so years of vibration and other movement might have fractured a lot of the strands in the cable. If you're down to a fraction of the original cross section, it will get hot.

 

If you've got a voltmeter, you could check volts from battery to earth, then volts from the solenoid (the post where the suspect cable connects) to earth, to give you the voltage being dropped over the cable. It shouldn't be that much, though couldn't tell you what a good or bad value would be.

You would need to check the V at both ends under load & compare the two. With no load there will be minimal resistance so much less v drop.

9 times out of ten it will be a bad earth, give your battery clamps and terminals a once over with wet and dry

Im having the very same problem with Layla, had ta bump her off yesterday, 2 batterys and she would only just turn over! in all fairness i have known it needs sorting for a while, gonna renew both + and - leads as the old ones are getting hot and look knackered also clean all the earths up then check starter motor. Hope this sorts it.

Is it when its cold? We have the same trouble with a teleporter, usually a good heat will get it going but if not jump it. Only happens during the winter, other times of year it starts just fine

Could be any of the reasons above start with the cheap and simple and work forward . Start with battery connections. If the starter is burning out the cables will get hot.

Checked all cables this morning and apart from 1 frayed the rest are ok. I bypassed the frayed one and will replace but I still did not get any joy. I have ordered an overhaul kit for the starter at a cost of £15 inc delivery so will get it off and strip it down and let you all know how I got on in a week or so. Thanks for all your replies

Had a lucky moment down the pub today. I spoke to the bloke I bought the tractor from a year ago and he has another in his yard. I can go up and borrow the starter off his tractor and see if it will start mine. At least then I will know If my starter is faulty.
