I'm wondering what you use in the way of hand and face 'protection'? Do you use leather hedging mitts (if you still get them) or other gloves? And a chainsaw helmet with a screen?

I'm thinking particularly about when laying thorn hedges.

I use a Husky chainsaw helmet with mesh visor and rigger type gloves, works for me

Same here. Husky helmet with mesh visor. Don't wear it continuously but always when using the chainsaw and in congested hedges to protect the eyes. And Weldas welding gauntlets on both hands. Specifically these ones:

WELDINGSUPERSTORE.CO.UK

Weldas Leather Mig Welding Gauntlet. Size Large.

A pack of five pairs will last me a full season. These are the best ones I've found that are supple enough to use and tough enough to last. Cheap red welding gloves from Screwfix or your local tool hire store will last about a day if you're lucky. Thorns go straight through and the stitching will unravel. These are kevlar stitched and I'll get three weeks or so out of a pair.

I have used a single mitt on the left hand, but you can't buy them off the shelf and the last one I had made was poor quality and a bad fit so I've stuck with gauntlets.

I work mostly with hawthorn and round here there often loads of bramble and briar, so it's not so much laying you need them for but pulling out rubbish so they tend to just stay on all the time.

Drawback is, in the wet they soften so thorns come through easier and they get green and slimy to the point where you can't keep hold of your hook.

When I get the chance to lay pure hazel hedges it is nice to do away with the gloves altogether.
