Is this on the first outing? No one has bent the bar on a previous outing have they?

Other than that, make sure the chain, bar and sprocket match - gauge, pitch and drive links.

Make sure that when you tighten the chain and do up the bar nut that the end of the bar is pushed upwards or you are griping the top of the chain and pulling upwards so the bar is pre-tensioned - amazed how many aren't aware of this simple technique and their chains keep going slack!

Spoke to a lot of guys straight out of nptc courses that weren’t even taught that!

So when tensioning the chain, hold the bar up, then tension the chain so it sits snug(?) to the bar, then tighten the bar clamp nut (or nuts)?  Or what's the best procedure?

First get rid of the bent bar .  Tighten the bar nuts by hand / or scrench just so it grips the bar but not so tight as the bar cant be moved up . Hold saw by the back handle and " drop " the tip of the bar on a log or similar . Now the bar will be pushed up . . With your free hand check the tension with it in this position ( pull the chain up and just be able to stat to see the drivers )  . If this is ok , with the tip still on the log tighten the bar nuts till they grip the bar enough that nothing else will influence its position then tighte finally .
