Thanks for your post se7enthdevil. I've attached samples of Cryptomeria japonica which seemed to contrast with the above. I'm aware there can be some variation .... any further thoughts?

One of those pictures is the 'Elegans' type which is not very representative of C. japonica. Some of the small or shrubby varieties have more dense foliage. Have a look at 'Compacta'. There's very few species that have incurved leaves. Cryptomeria virtually has the market cornered, but also look at Athrotaxus selaginoides.

Thanks for the helpful info, Jules (Athrotaxus is new to me - lovely looking thing). 

The leaves in my first image were slightly bluish (not refelcted in picture) making me think Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Boulevard' which, like C. japonica 'Elegans' is not representative of the genus. Planning a return visit for more clues.....
