It may be the clients decision, but you should have the decency to let the other fella know the client asked you before going behind his back. It works both ways. I wouldnt consider his offer of using his tools as rude, quite the opposite, it's a sign he trusts you to not damage his equipment imo.

Out of interest, what tools have you that he implied were not up to the job?

You are subbing for the guy, you are working for him, not the client.
If I found out that a subby was handing out personal details and working on the side for my clients you would be finished, it is simply not done, no matter how you manage to think it is okay in your own head.

I would also be letting everyone I knew in the Industry exactly  what you had been up to and you wouldn’t be subbing for them either, you would be stacking shelves in Tesco before you knew it.

Doing hedges for him on Monday so presumably he was on about hedge cutters .

this is more of a handyman type person advertises for garden and trees /landscaping/home work .

Once did Internal decorating with him  and the work he did was done to appalling standard and I definitely don’t want to be associated with shoddy work .luckily for him the woman couldn’t see that well but I should have walked off the job

Jack, not a personal attack here, but having cleared up the mess left behind at that job in Croydon for you, and seen a thread on here where you "dismantled" a pine, I think you should get some tickets and do some work for a reputable tree company to gain some useful experience.
