They were in difficult places to dig so it’s possible that some roots got severed. One tree isn’t doing too bad, the leaves are just limp. It’s been hot on and off but I’ve watered everyday, like a gallon of water. Is that too much? Not sure what you mean by work staged?

Did you insert an irrigation pipe into the hole . Makes a good difference . No water wasted with run off .

I understood winter was the best time to move trees, as they're dormant. I was pleased to see an 8ft acer we moved in Feb was leafed up and looking healthy when I drove past today. We severed a couple of roots as they went too deep to dig out, and it survived. Hope your trees cope OK. J.

By staged i mean work out where yr digging round it and if there are significant root extensions - cut/dig a year or two before moving. Sometimes severing one side one year and other side next year, this gives less shock to the tree. Mulching after replant is important- but mostly retaining and protecting as much fine root as possible, so that the tree can draw water n nutrients as quick as possible. Pruning branches a year or two before moving is better than after if it needs to fit a certain spot. Plus the orientation of the tree to North must be the same. K
