That would depend on the dataset(s). I had to trawl through statistics when I did my degree, it wasn't much fun.
What would you change in terms of the way the government has handled things?

That’s a ridiculous question as we now have had 3 months more data and know more about the virus and know better what would have worked and what wouldn’t.

Do you think they could have done anything differntly that would have led to less deaths when they made decisions three months ago, based on the data they had at the time?

I think that a lockdown and closing of our borders earlier on might have seen us in a better postition in terms of deaths. Based on the charts that were available at the time.

What do you think?

I’ve not seen or looked for the data that was available at the time, however looking back now will still be tainted thinking as we can’t un remember what we have learned no matter how hard we try to look at it with fresh eyes.

just to add to that if they had locked down sooner they would have been crucified for it.
and today people would be saying they should have locked down another two weeks previously.

Perhaps, but it's extremely telling that a large number of businesses had essentially shut down before the government introduced lockdown measures. They were going on some mad 'herd immunity' at the time, completely ignoring what was happening in other countries which were being hit hard. They were following what many of the public were already doing rather than having a bright idea.

On a side note though, the UK does seem to have been hit disproportionately hard by covid. Yes, the governments strategy was a joke. But the likes of Germany have been less strict on lockdown, and have fared far better. Their health system obviously plays some part, but I wonder if they're just generally healthier too?

You can second guess this all the way back to last year when the Chinese government could have shut it down. They were far too late.

i think part of the problem for the uk is that we have Heathrow and Manchester airports bringing tens of thousands of people in everyday and by the time the people that brought it here were Poorly or even asymptotic wandering around spreading it it was too late to stop it.

herd immunity is still the way forward without a vaccine which is still the plan from what I can tell. If it wasn’t we would have had a proper complete lockdown and closed borders months ago.

To add to what I said before I don’t think the governments strategy was a joke. No one knew how bad it was going to be worldwide it’s never happened before (at least not in this short timeframe

Come back up to Scotland J and you will see what the other end of the spectrum is causing. The financial, economic, mental health and subsequent social crash that’s going to happen up here is gonna be horrendous long term. Hospitals are empty, treatments for all other illnesses are on hold but hey nothing else matters than follow the guidelines stuck with it blah blah blah. I truly get the feeling we are starting to see a level of control over the population that politicians especially those of Sturgeons character would like to maintain long rather than short term.
The balance had long since gone out of this process.

Forgive my ignorance but what is the deal with the powers to be having control in this situation?

This is Shirly the worst kind of control they could have.

Shirly governments want us to go to work, earn as much as we can (to get taxed on it) then get out and about spending our hard earned so they can claim some more tax back on the sales.

How sitting at home getting paid from the government  while not  spending money is considered as control baffles me.

I dont get it, enlighten me people.
