I’m also trying to work out whether a tall tower offers an airflow advantage over a wider, squat one.

I would guess so, but at the cost of stability?

No worse dimensions than the mesh wrapped ones a few posts up and made of steel to boot. You could do triangular ones for thinner columns or pentagons, hexagons etc for fatter. All can tessellate and provide pleasing brutalism as a bonus.

Some interesting ideas on display. I think everyone who produces even a modest amount of firewood has wrestled with this issue.

If you go down the stock fencing route I would recommend buying a new roll. this makes life much easier. You also end up with a much more pleasing result if you have a ring of fencing on top of the pallet rather than round the edges. You lose a bit of capacity but it is very easy to add a second layer with a few cable ties.

When I first started with this system I secured the netting to the pallet with four fencing staples but found after a while that this wasn't really necessary.

This option is not so great for a commercial operation, but for home storage it works well.

Hope you find a fun system that works for you.

@the village idiot Hi, could you please tell me how high those wire cages are?  I'm going to create the same set up and I'm not sure if I should use mesh 1200 high (for easier access) or 1800 high (for more storage capacity).  Thanks

I think you will find either to be difficult to empty - unless of course you are prepared to cut the wire - we use 800mm net and find that to be plenty on 1200 x 1200 pallets

I don't think 1200 high would be too difficult to empty - I'd just stand on a small ladder or undo the mesh join.  Of course a shorter height would be easier, but I'm trying to maximise the amount of wood I place on each pallet (and balance that out with ease of access).

Stand on a taller ladder... but you still have to reach the bottom of the inside unless you are an orangutan with massive long arms?

As previously mentioned, you can just undo the wire if stretching is too difficult for you.
