Ideas how to check if old chipper isn’t stolen?

Phone the manufacturer with the serial number - some have a (not necessarily up-to-date) list of ownership. Stolen machines are often reported to the manufacturer in case they ‘turn up’ in the future.

Don’t touch anything with missing/amended/dodgy looking serial numbers (no matter what the seller’s story is). And don’t buy anything you haven’t physically seen first hand yourself!
