Spear Cut

There is also a very simple, safe and effective cut that we do in the UK called a step down cut, it is also in the Husqvarna advanced chainsaw techniques book, page 40, it’s been around for years.

The tree tends to slide backwards using this cut rather than just sticking in the ground and recreating the problem tree situation again and again and again and again and again, so you only have to make the risky cut once instead of 10 times like in woodhenge.

Thanks for all the feedback and examples of what some of you have used this cut for...personally I think it’s a pen underrated cut and in a lot more circumstances should be used but the tree needs to be in the right Proportions and correct surrounding I for one wouldn’t attempt a spear cut like the guys in some of the clips show...they looked scared shitless and not in control of the situation and or the tree.

on some smaller stuff like birches personally prefer just to do several undercuts and let the weight of it fall in and they usually come down after a few 5ft  sections have come off  .getting underneath with a length of log will work in some cases 

not really had to do that many but this new method looks bit safer

I've used it fair bit on larch jobs similar to spuds.

Not a lot else u can do dropping single trees surrounded by others.

 

Personally i hate it, it does work well but it can be bloody dangerous.

Ok on smaller stuff but when u get into big stuff can be a bit hairy at times.

Esp when the tree is more vertical and it just sits down on ur cut and doesn't move, wieght/friction must hold it there.

Handy have a wee rope or long felling bar so u can push the tree from a distance

Edit Or worse ur saw gets trapped in cut, when tree goes good chance ur saw is going to be squashed esp if play it safe and keep ur distance, so ur in closer trying to save ur saw.

No. Because that was for a video.
It was showing off.
No one would ever spend ages setting up a 12" tree.

I’ve done it on big trees on wet moorland where the butt sinks into the ground when you get it off the stump. The FC banned this technique from their sites some years ago after a novice got injured so I obviously don’t do it anymore. ?
