Morning all,

Can anyone give ideas as to what this lump of tree is?  The guy who gave it to me suggested it may be a Black Cherry, or some different kind of Beech.  I am very new to the world of wood so i have very little idea.  I am intending to use it for wood turning which is my new hobby (again i am a beginner!!) and knowing what wood it is would be handy to read up on how it may behave.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks in advance,

Tim

Fast growing whatever it is . looks more of a soft wood to me but I am useless at theses . :) I am going with White Spruce .

Thats what I thought at first looks at bark but if you look careully theres some epicormic coming off the trunk which made me think hardwood and the wood looks Nothofagus to me...that pinky colouration....
