Hi all,

Hiring a chipper from a local tree surgeon and I need to insure it for the week. Rang my insurance who I have PLI and tools insured with but they said they wouldn't insure a machine I don't own unless it was a hired machine from a registered hire company. Anyone insured something like this before and if so how?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Duncan

You need hired in plant insurance, which can be relatively expensive for one off hires unfortunately. It’s best taken as an annual bolt-on to your EL/PL policy where possible.

I had a similar issue many moons ago and the cheapest way I managed to get cover was to take out an entirely separate PL insurance policy for landscaping through an online broker. The policy allowed different product bolt-ons (own tools, EL etc) - I bought what I needed and it worked out cheaper than adding HIP onto my existing tree surgery policy. You have to ensure the cover you take is enough for the value of what you are hiring in - in the event of a claim the insurers can reduce the payout by whatever percentage you are underinsured...

Your insurance company need to move with the times. It doesn't have to be a registered company! Registered with who anyway?

As long as you have some sortt of written agreement to hire it, that's good enough!
