Another easy target to make it look like something significant is being done. I think anyone taking a flight should be made to stay at their destination for a minimum of seven days. It would stop all these futile trips and using flights like busses. A plane will get through at least 20-30,000 litres per flight - that's a fair bit of pollution.

Exactly, all those very important meetings our politicians have that go nowhere and mean nothing, business meetings that could be done by video conferencing etc and what about all those visits to Lapland over Christmas by over privileged kids, that's another 50,000 litres there and back by each plane!

Yes, perhaps they have not heard of the Internet: Facetime, Skype etc, although I suspect most of it is driven by the associated gravy train of expenses.

In our business telecoms are normal and flights are rare, if only from an economic PoV.  The cost of flights, hotels, and man hours to go somewhere is huge compared to a Telecom.  Would not normally travel even to a local contact unless we have to as you soon burn half a day for a 1 hour meeting that way, although it is rare that we work with locals.  There are times when face to face makes a big difference so it is not unheard of but it is rare.  I would have several meetings a week (sometimes a day) with suppliers and customers but have only travelled 3 times in a year.

Given the basic economic of telecoms over travel I'd be surprised if this is not uncommon.

With politicians it seems to be a case of "do what I say, not as I do". I live in Scotland and the First Minister up here is always talking up Scotland's green credentials while being chauffered everywhere and taking a helicopter for "longer" journeys. Oh how it must be good to have an expense account which the tax man never queries :)
