Does anyone tidy up windfall trees in woodland in return for the  timber to use as firewood instead of charging, does this work out financially ?

No.

Not unless it's 36" walnut.

That’s a bit mean.  I would do this for 32” walnut if mixed with pippy oak.

It's wind blown not windfall.
The most dangerous trees there are.
IF you've got your Forestry tractor and winch with trailer and crane paid off,
And no other overheads at all.
A large yard, processor and splitters,
another forklift/tractor for moving the IBC's.
Delivery vehicle.
Volunteer staff.
Etc etc etc.
There's a massive difference between knocking out a few cube and a thousand cube.
What kit will you use?

I hear what your saying, but you dont have to have all that kit to do firewood,i did it years ago with a db990 and a small splitter on it ,made a living for 2yrs like that, kept the wood under tin sheeting so air could get in(no ibcs),just saying?
