Don't go Mac, waste of money for the OP's level of usage. Equivalent PC will serve you just as well with very basic care. My old Acer laptop (Windows) must be 5 years old and is running fine, cost me about £400 IIRC. I use both Macs and PCs at work and really don't get on with the Macs, everything must be done The Apple Way or it just won't work.

Also, our main video processing Mac cost about 7k. The equivalent PC we use now cost about 4k and works faster and better. (Though the PC does use different software, TBF).

Just one of many reasons why a certain OS will never feature on any computer I own.

Ever used cad ??
Hi, yes It was part of my studies at college a few years back. I really got into it whilst at college, and the ex brother in law is a surveyor for a company, and he can get me some part time work doing it. But since my work place put me through the course, they haven't let me carry on doing any so I'm a bit rusty now, but I'd like to pick it up again. I was also getting quite proficient with sketch up at one point, but again I've gone rusty with it. I turn 50 this year so looking ahead to something else to do when I get fed of being on tools.

Mac vs Windows is like Stihl/Husky vs Mitox. Big difference in price, both will do the job... one is much nicer to use and holds value way better. So doesn't end up costing you any more in the long run. Bit like buying a braad new Ifor Williams.

One won’t give you any hassle, no blue screen and is intuitive, the other........?

Not really, this will probably bring howls of dissaproval but if you do through life costings with Mac as my clients used to demand, then it works out more or less the same. As you state the resale values usually hold up well too.

What works quite well is to export the old PC to a virtual machine running on VM Ware Fusion which is useful during the transition period, have cake and eat springs to mind.
