Oak tree on clay soil.

Recommended Posts

Following a Sonic tomograph survey I’m having an oak extensively pruned to relieve the load on the trunk which has moderate Ganoderma resinaceum fungus in the basal area.

Both the arborist and tree surgeon advise having a further Sonic tomograph inspection carried out after two years as the fungus may have spread, the tree becomes dangerous being close to the house and may need to be felled.

I read that if an oak on clay soil is removed it could cause heave due to re hydration of the ground. Is this the case?  The tree is 7 metres from the house.

Yes it is the case.

Regarding the 2 year inspection however, i wouldn't overly panic about this. Its a standard caveat on a report to cover oneself. With the work you're having done on the Oak tree its quite possible that the tree will stand for many years.

Got a pic of the tomograph?

I would say it’s more likely that it could possibly be the case.

A lot would depend on the size of the tree, the actual type of clay soil, and the topography.

You’re lucky I told you that, I don’t normally speak to grasses!

Is it causing subsidence now?
