Given the horsey involvement chicken wire may not last long. I don't know what your budget situation is but could some heavy duty plastic sheets be fixed to the planks and painted with acrylic bed liner (e.g. Protectakote) or similar? That's textured paint used for lining pickup beds instead of plastic trays.

An idea I hadn't considered, as I didn't know acrylic bed liner existed! Thanks. I take it that it isn't a cheap option as you enquired about budget?

Mind you I don't mind too much what the cost is if I can minimise the number of 'bambi on ice' moments I have to go through!

So how do I stand if I do nothing and there is an accident?

Obviously insurance is in place, but just wondering!

My opinion in this "free riding" sue their asses of society we have is

Well as you have identified that there is a problem & then chose not to do any thing about it due to cost I would say they would hang you out to dry. Plus as you have not taken steps to indemnify the insurance companies risk they will also hang you out to dry.

My money would be on expamet being the best choice.

As above, be very careful with this one if you have members of the public crossing the bridge on horseback / foot regularly. This would probably call for regular written inspections with all work carried out to a standard as mentioned above.

I once had a nag fall in a woodland and break its leg, by the time we arrived to the High Court the dam thing was a 'potential National Hunt winner' M'laud!
