Toads!

Slightly more sophisticated log pile making up my poplar log cabin by the lake.  Built with full scribe method in 2000 but due to foot and mouth the team could not come up from Devon to help build it until the Winter when it had to be built in a Dutch barn.

Because of the time lapse between taking the logs from the barn to the site, they had moved a fraction which resulted in a small gap between the top layer.

Dozens of Pipistrelle bats have taken up residence as can be seen by their mouse like droppings, I put a 20p coin there for scale

Found in my workshop this morning, Marbled Newt.

 

The dog saw it first, but it did a play dead thing and he lost interest.

 

 

5 minutes later it had gone.

Isn’t he just? I have a little fish pond 30 yards from the workshop which is his base i guess.

I remember as a kid going over some abandoned land near us . ( I am going back 60 odd years )  there was a big old willow next to a natural dew pond and we would collect newts , frogs water boatmen etc etc . It was before they were protected obviously . Some had a bright red belly and were green on top . There were sheets of corrugated iron lying about and we would lift them and catch mice and slow worms and stuff . Its all built on now though ....

Always coming accross toads and lizards when I’m wallling- On this particular job I scooped an adder out of a ditch with the digger- fortunately he was unharmed- but a little irritated to have been disturbed in such a manner- understandably.

Yeah- pic is of a toad (obviously) but same job encountered the adder.

Toads are phlegmatic, ‘take your picture and put me back, I got stuff to do’
