New Defender

As ever with things like this it very likely will come down to ...want and cost.

If you want one and have the money then you will buy one .

I can remember the grumble about the Discovery when it was launched and how some said it "Isn't a proper sort of Landy " ...Well that can be discounted now surly !!

I have had a range rover and a 90 in the past and would like one of ether now , however there isn't the money to buy the older sorts or the newer sorts.

Want and cost...that mostly what it takes .

lets face it, the new defender is for people who currently have to put their dogs and go out shooting in their range rover (which isn't ideal lets face it!!) and they are in need of a 'cheap' vehicle to throw the dogs in without a care

oh and also to take the horse trailer across a wet bit of grass every 8 months

that's LR's target market

I think the 200 and 300 are the most simple engines in landys but the Td5 is the stronger one of all

yeh, also, the 200 and 300 come with the ability to tune using a adjustable, bit of black smoke later and you have a load more horses

but the td5, great engine - when they work, when i had mine, i felt more like an electrician keeping it on the road than a diy mechanic

Farmers use quad bikes and Mules/Gators when they want to check stock, and tractors are faster and more comfortable then ever- so they use these to pull heavy stuff. For them a utilitarian defender is more or less redundant- the cheaper Japanese vehicles are perfectly adequate for everything else.

I know the 4x4 market is all geared towards Chelsea tractor bling these days, but there would still be a big market for a tough, simple, powerful not too many frills pick up, surely?

I can't believe not one of the manufacturers has looked at this.

There are still enough people out there who need a proper working vehicle to make it viable.

This and a few other threads has helped me realise that not everyone wants a leather lined chromed up poncemobile with a 1.2l engine tweaked to 200bhp with 300 ECUs.

Exactly- I can only think manufacturers have looked at it and deduced there simply isn’t enough of a market for it over what the pimpmobiles offer.

TBH the 79series landcruiser (pick up form)  would tick absolutely every box for me. Proper 4.2L engine- engineered to easily tow 3.5t (I’m not convinced with any of the other uk pickups on the market at the moment despite their claims). But I doubt I could afford one- think they’re north of £40k!
