If the winter's cold enough, the longest I keep mine going non-stop is about four weeks. It's an old Villager stove and the only heating in the house.

The glass is blacked out and you can't see the fire but it's very efficient.

Really dense logs like laurel and holly are put to one side and used to keep it in overnight or through the day when at work and it gets fired it up on regular logs in the evening to clear its tubes.

Rest of the time it's shut right down and only just ticking over. Just enough to keep the house warm. Only let it out at four weeks because the damper eventually gets gummed up and needs a clean. Generally give the chimney a sweep at the same time.

Can't believe you can get modern airwash stoves to shut right down and keep going like that. (Stayed at a friends house once while they were away and they had  some airwash thing - Chinese I think - and the amount of logs it got through it would have been cheaper to have oil CH with the windows open.

Though maybe stoves have moved on a bit since. I confess I haven't bought a new one in years.

I get mine going when the nights get chilly. It’s in the kitchen where these days we spend most of our time. We’ve both got cosy chairs to watch the telly?. Then when it’s colder it’s all systems go, and I use it to cook on, curry’s, stews, bologna’s, soups, even the occasional fry up! That’s why I’m always here begging free wood??
