Dirty Chain - baked on Oil/Dust?

Hi All,

Some advice please. I know I should have taken some pictures but I didn't.

I was sharpening the chains on the bench mounted grinder and they have a lot of this baked on crud.

Hoping you know what I mean.

It looks to be a combo of the fine dust from the chainsaw mill (Chillaskan) and chain oil.

 

I've cleaned it off after sharpening using petrol and a brass wire brush.

It has happened on both the 25" and 36" bars.

Currently milling some very green English oak.

 

My Question Is:  Am I doing something wrong to get this?

 

For info:

I try to keep the chains sharp. Ripping chains 10deg.

I do try and over oil as I feel it saves bar wear.....right or wrong.

I don't currently use a winch...that is next on my wishlist.

 

 

Any comments greatly appreciated.

Hi Stubby,

  I use STIHL Synth Plus. Always have.

 

Maybe I should have also said....

I haven't experienced this before. I haven't milled loads but I have done some 3' Pop and some 2' Ash. This is 1.5' Oak with the odd crotch needing the 3' bar.

find this can be a problem on some of the hardwoods, oak, elm, sometimes ash if its been down long, and beech, I usually run 4 chains at a time, when one becomes blunt, changing it out for a sharp one, I drop the chains into a bucket of  kero and let it soak, when its time to sharpen, chain out of the kero, a quick run through a rag and a brish down with an old brass wire bush I have, this, I find cleans off all the cooked on crud and allows a good inspection whilst sharpening, the chain change routine also allows me to clean and turn the bar at the same time, doesnt take long and gives the saw a break as well
