Aren’t they tempered AFTER they’ve been manufactured?

Hmmmmm, No, since manufacturing is the entire process, between raw material and finished product.

Machined, perhaps, then heat treated, as part of the manufacturing process.

Thats what I meant, the form is manufactured, then the tempering/heat treating 

which is the key to the durability of the blade.

Other way round Mick . Hardened then tempered back to a suitable rockwell value  for the intended use . Then finish ground .

Yep you certainly do need it a North Yorkshire tree company has found out on numerous occasions
I wouldn’t go near a Forst with its boiling bearings and electrical glitches.

I found out with 2 machines on a good few occasions! Bandits don’t seem to have the same problems strangely enough !
