Lammas growth, already?

As in I have observed the distinctive orangish colour fresh growth on several young Oaks, that I associate with so-called lammas growth.

Have noticed this also .

So  Stubby, unusual weather pattern related then , i.e. unseasonally fierce early heat followed by a cooler period or sommat?

I have to be honest and say | don't know . I have observed it before and just thought it was associated with new growth/young shoots . Looks like the beginnings of a copper coloured leaf which I think turns green when mature .

This was the first time I observed it, that I recall, was all.

Oaks do it a lot , every year - well not sure about the discolouration every year though

 Oaks do this but they always do it mid summer. Having an extra flush of leaves on the outer branches during weather like this is counter productive in some ways. Sure you get more photosynthesis but the outer leaves of the crown will be shut down to reduce water loss (respiration).

I suspect its just to replace any leaves that have been lost already due to P&D etc

Have had a lot of lammas growth on the young oaks around where I work. Haven't noticed too much of it before this year, don't know if it is related to last years long heat wave period. Have had a number of other things such as tulip trees flowering more so this year than previous and sweet chestnuts flowering like there's no tomorrow!!

both native in hotter countries so better conditions for them at the moment I suspect

I thought it was related to earlier defoliating  insect attack, the replacement growth being  full of chemicals to make them less palatable which gives the colour.

 

I saw the combines going in today so the timing is about right (though it was probably barley rather than wheat for the first loaf)
