2015 Ms181 Non Start - at my wits end!

If  an engine will not start on FRESH petrol it  certainly will not start on Aspen as Aspen is very slightly less volatile than fresh petrol (but far more volatile than old petrol), so in this instance do not waste your money, but save it for when you have your saw fixed, then use Aspen to go forwards.

There is a certain amount of truth in that some engines will benefit from a carb overhaul prior to using Aspen, but in most of these cases the carb needs overhauling anyway, even to run on petrol.

The vast majority of quality, modern engines will convert to Aspen with no issues.

Some fuel lines and grommets will harden, as others have said, but not all. Better quality rubbers such as the more recent green Stihl ones, and Ethanol proof Tygon will likely not have suffered from petrol damage and will not shrink or harden when the petrol is removed/

Cheap, chinese products tend to use really rubbish fuel lines and grommets which fall apart in 12 months anyway when exposed to petrol, but last indefinatley if only subjected to Aspen from new.

Perhaps should have mentioned the fuel mix has always been the green Stihl stuff with the fuel stabilizer in, though the saw isn't used regularly it never goes more than 6 months without a few tanks of fuel run through it. Anyway I decided I can't afford to spend any more time on it so it's being dropped off at the local Stihl dealer so I'll update what they come back with!

The saw came from them originally so hopefully they won't screw me over! Or if they come back and say it's definitely the ignition coil/carb/something else and it'll be a million pounds to fix, I'll have it back off them and fit the parts myself for less. Fingers crossed

Every time someone's given me a saw and said it doesn't work, I've put motomix in it and it's worked. Probably ten times. Doesn't seem like luck. The stats are with me. Most small engine problems are fuel related.

I have. I own two saws that I bought second hand. Their previous owners ran them on petrol. I bought them, put motomix in them and they've worked fine since. I used one of them yesterday.

I would say most running issues revolve around carbs followed by compression issues. You do get the more exotic ones where the big end has grenaded, rings broken, customer damage removing the clutch etc

 

Personally, if a machine wasn't running and I put new fuel in it and it worked, I wouldn't send it back without looking at the carb, fuel lines etc! I just know it would be back again in a short while and that is never good.
