Chestnut post and rail.

Anyone on here able to supply cleft post and rail ? The stock from my local AVS is consistently rubbish. The ends of the rails and the mortises always require fettling which is a massive waste of time on site. A lot of the post are very twisted.

Spoke to another local producer but he was double the cost of AVS.

I’m

Based in Haslemere, Surrey / W Sussex border. Drop me a message if you might be able to help.

Cheers

I've just installed 120m of chestnut post and rail from McVeigh Parker which was shipped out to Brittany.

It was pretty rough, twisted and 'shaggy' and yes some rails required fettling but the client is over the moon with the effect.

I recently met a guy who specialises in cleft sweet chestnut pails, all produced by hand in Kent, the vast majority is shipped to France, I couldn’t believe it.

He told me that the French guy sells a lot of it on in Germany at three times the price to be used in the skiing resorts.

Jersey client did.

It cost as much to ship as is cost to buy.

First, post and rail like this is isn't available here.

Second, if we had had it made up having sourced the correct wood, the cost would be eyewatering.

Buy a couple of acres of standing sweet chestnut and get a couple of us boys over to cut it all into product for you, might deliver a decent return?
