Planting trees and hedgerows

Recommended Posts

Well our new so called Tree Minister has outlined plans to plant 3Billion trees and 200’000 miles of hedgerows by 2050...step in the right direction or just election talk???Mr worsley is the right guy for the job as he is a farmer and landowner who himself has planted out Thousands  trees over a number of years on his estate.if this happens it will stand this country in good stead for generations to come and I for one will be happy..however as with all these projects it comes down to cost and funding...not only for the sourcing the correct tree species but for the labour to plant out and of course to keep the trees and saplings free from out furry friends who will have a knife and fork ready for the feast and not forgetting the non indigenous species who find there way here...we have big problems in that area...anyway I think it’s a massive step in the right direction so let’s see how this develops...hope so in my life time.

Actually a piece of journalism in the daily mail that is not terribly written.

Likely will end up as greenwash though as the  goverment aren't big on enviroment.

What would 3 billion trees be as an % increase in current numbers of UK trees?

In my view even the mention of planting any number of trees is good news and may be just may Mr Wordsley is has good as his name and sticks to his words and follows it through...like I said his background is farming and not may people know more about ecology and conservation etc then farmers...trees are the life blood of the planet and we are in major trouble at the moment and I know nature has away of dealing with changes to climate and diseases, but a lot of what’s happening now to the planet aren’t natural they are man made so whatever we can do to help is a good thing.

The idea is great if it happens,I think it should be everybody,s duty to plant trees anyway to at least try and do our bit,no matter how small or big a piece of ground or garden we should all try to plant a tree of some description that's what I think anyway

Just out of interest, how many acres would be needed to plant 3 billion trees and 200000 miles of hedges.

I don't know if there would be room for any food crops.

Im all for planting more though.

Personally I can’t see any issues with the planting of billions of trees as it will be mainly planting out into areas were trees and or single tree have died,as for the hedgerows I think there will be a problem not only deciding were to begin but the farm equipment we have now needs wide open acreage of fields and turning them back into a patch work as of 50/60 years ago with be near impossible.

There is a huge problem with this if lots of trees get planted in the wrong place.  I would like to see a couple of arb experts behind this to guide or advise, not some blanket coverage to just look good in the press. K
