cut as per rh side of image, not all oaks have prominent ray in my experience, some huge trees i have milled  have yielded some very plain QS boards, unlike the ones in the image.These came from a tree 78" dia, cross cut to length, halved then quartered by chainsaw, cut into cants to give board width then milled to required boards.
I always thought that QS meant saw cut was at a greater tangent angle than 45* to growth ring,

Thanks, yeah I cut as per left hand side of diagram for that first quarter of the log, with hardly any rays showing in the resulting boards, will try the right hand way for another quarter. If I still can't find any rays then perhaps it's just not meant to be with this one.

it would not have been firewood back in the day. you may consider it so for your purposes but our forefathers will have had uses for it from beading on door panels to architrave and probably a thousand other uses before the world decided to use prime oak for such things rather than the offcuts...
