Imidacloprid tree application

Question

I had a Sumard Red Oak (approx 8 centimeters diameter) planted last fall-- hardiness zone 8a. The tree farm recommended that I use a product with active ingredient Imidacloprid 2.94% this spring to protect against insects. I already have Imidacloprid .72%. Can I use this product instead? If so, how would you recommend I apply it?

Imidacloroprid is a neonicotinoid and has been, I believe, banned in Europe due to its evidently detrimental effects on pollinators. I have no idea how you would apply it (72% sounds worrisome to me); perhaps you could ask your tree farm supplier.

I think this will be a personal choice. Myself I would not spray anything to protect against insects, the tree will do a good job itself and the environment is better the less we spray around. Consider good formative pruning, mulch if possible and don't let the young tree dry out too much this summer.
