can people please stop trying to work out who is right and wrong about an opinion that does not matter...

i started this thread because a medieval building was being gutted by fire not so i could read pointless posts...

Thing is you started this thread just after Eggs posted it on " making the news today "  so there are a lot of opinions flying  about cross threaded if you see what I mean . ?

I think it's terribly sad. Think of all that stained glass and old pews that have gone. Much sadder and more deserving of all this crying than Grenfell. That only had people in it and no stained glass

Exactly. They were just people. Property is much more important, especially church property.

Yes, of course the Grenfell fire was a tragedy.

Those irreplaceable lives lost are obviously more important than any building, but just because people die in fires doesn’t mean that you shouldnt reflect on the near destruction of one of the most important buildings in the world.

Notre Dame is a hugely significant place in world history and for millions of people in France and beyond a priceless symbol of cultural identity and belonging.

It's important to remember there isn’t a finite amount of empathy, you can express sadness for Notre Dame and still feel sorry for the victims of Grenfell.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

One report said they felled 52 acres of trees to build the roof, each beam from a single tree. Hope they use authentic twelfth century methods to cut the timber again, no cheating

I guess your gonna see the price of decent french oak jump, as will the demand for good carpenters and traditional timber framers and masons etc.  Macrons 5 year promise  will be a hard one to keep.

Two completely different events, not really comparable I don’t think, I’d go as far as to say it’s a bit silly to compare them and even sillier to try and tell people what they should be sad about and how much sadness they should give to certain events. Crazy.

Did  grenfell tower get built a thousand yrs ago?.. No, Notre Dame is of much more significance than a shitty tower block built in the sixties..

people define themselves by the iconic buildings in their countries..  its what makes a people a people..  what they did in times past..   what they built..

No one is gonna miss a crappy tower block in two hundred yrs.. on the other hand Note Dame would be missed as one of Europe's finest Cathedrals..
