Took a 281 in as a trade in against a 562 last weekend and I’ve a mate looking for a milling saw, he was using his bosses 3120 but it’s time to get his own saw. Would the 281 pull his 36” bar? It’s not long term but something to keep him going until he can afford a 3120/880 of his own.

Probably pushing it, milling isn't my thing but perhaps a skip/semi skip chain would help. The 281 should have a good amount of torque grunt which is positive and they do tune up well.

The 281 doesn't share the same bar mount as a 3120....does that scupper the idea?

Yes.
But I wouldn't mill over 30" with it.
