I guess so, perhaps.

 

You would need to be pretty organised to have access to a number of (relatively new to make it viable) scrap chippers/trailers, plus the buyer would have to be in on it.

 

It does make it a lot less attractive for the opportunistic thief to nick stuff like that.

Which is why I guess JCB always ask for a serial number when ordering bits, as well as to ensure that the right parts are supplied.

 

When one of our our chippers was stolen (3 were stolen in the seven years I was there out of a fleet of a dozen, this one, one recovered by tracker and one never found) it turned up in the Netherlands, was subsequently bought by and unsuspecting tree surgeon in Scotland, where it was recognised by one of our staff.

One thing I have discovered which is a bit disturbing.

I reported it to my insurance company on the day, but haven’t made a claim yet, as I’m still hoping for a result.

I pay extra for a ‘reinstatement’ policy on tools, i.e. new for old.

I paid £7.5k for that chipper in 2009, ex-demo from Orange Plant.

Turns our that the maximum pay-out would be £7.5k.

I pointed out that prices tend to increase over a decade, but that’s their stance.

Not really new for old then, is it?

 

Worth checking your policies lads.

Update on this is I’m getting paid out £7.5k because I stated that was the price of the chipper when purchased new (in 2009).

It’s better than a kick in the nuts I suppose, but I’ll make damn sure I’m never underinsured again, and I suggest you all do the same.

Better than nothing like you say..... cant get new for old at that age? 

 

Inflation is the bugger here as will be a lot more now.

Yes mate.

Can’t fault them really, they have been quick and efficient.

I should have been more forceful with them at renewal, and made it clear that I expected a TW160 as a replacement, which costs over £13k.

I would have been happy to pay more to cover this.
