Bugger! This was what I was afraid of. Yet another example of why you can't believe what you read on the internet. Thanks for the reality check Mick!
Looks like I'll have to take a harder line than Id hoped on any holey timber.
I've no plans to sell anything I might make, but I'm doubtful that you'd ever get sued over woodworm, even in today's ridiculously over litigious culture.

I wonder if this idea might be practical to help you get any particularly nice pieces that you want to keep up to a high enough temperature to kill any beasties...all you really need is a wallpaper steamer.

I've tried this and the wood does get very hot but them it also gets wet.

If it's already in there, it's not going anywhere until the grubs are grown and ready to emerge. Come to think of it, I understand that woodworm and deathwatch beetle cope very well with dry wood. They get all the water they need by metabolising it out of the wood as they digest it.
