It could be done pretty straightforward with an adjustable sliding axles setup similar to the fast tow forwarding trailers that have exactly the same issues of nose weight whilst empty.

 

The additional benefit is you can bring the axles right forward to make it easier to manoeuvre for access.

 

Standard 750kg class Chipper on the drawbar and bin on the back.

Self contained 3.5 tonne unit, I’d estimate around 2 tonne of chip capacity?

 

Custom build, unknown resale, could be a clumsy lump? Who knows, someone has to go first sometimes.

 

My thoughts would be it can’t be that hard to simply move up a weight class on the towing vehicle to stay traditional  setup and carry the extra chip required.

Not hard no. Just 5 tests to pass per driver.

 

Costly? Yes.

 

Plus lots of on going pain re tacho O licence DCPC etc etc.

I think an easy solution is.....

A cheap second tow vehicle!  A good usable Discovery, trooper, ranger etc can be had for under 2k. It can do loads of different jobs, no one trick pony.

Its not very often that tree jobs creating tipper trailer loads of chip get done by one person, and if you get a sub 750kg chipper anyone can tow it? 

When you get to site the chipper can be used connected to its tow vehicle, loose or bolt a tow bar on the back of the trailer to keep the chipper secure.

 

A truck  mounted chipper sounds like a great idea in theory but would cost a ton of money for a very specialised bit of kit. Unless you have a job that needs exactly that.

 

One good setup I suppose could be the biggest chipper you could get mounted on a 3.5t truck, towing a digger with a grab to feed it, chipping into other vehicles or piles. That could produce some serious volumes??

If it was built right should not be any different then towing trailer and could be towed with any truck with correct licence. On some jobs could do away with extra truck if towing  truck has carrying capacity as well for timber or tools and road signs and cones to and from job site.

I wasn't knocking the idea, like I say someone always has to go first and the solution is already there, tested/proven on the sliding axle fast tow forwarding trailers.

Those were a few of the obvious pitfalls I could see, but who knows it may be a fantastic success?

In the good old days you could build it yourself, but I'd assume this would involve some form of testing on the trailer, so could be costly going first.

I get what you mean if you do some sums like chipper price and trailer then getting it past by how ever then it would be over priced.
