Did anyone see the program on antibiotics

The film on bacteria and antibiotics at war is what trees do every day fighting off fungi infection or bacterial infection

What do people think.

Yes I did.  Good stuff except for the presenter who grates with me!

Bacteria and antibiotics are everywhere it seems and so the scientific prospects for finding new ones seem good.  The real world problem is - wait for it - money.  No surprise there.

That E.coli demonstration by Harvard was sobering; 10 days to evolve sufficiently to overcome 1000x strength antibiotic - crazy.

Those phages must surely have potential.  If the Eastern bloc, not known for being technologically advanced or well funded compared to the West, can get decades of anti-bacterial success with them where have we been?  In the pockets of the pharma companies? Surely not...

I was impressed by the Dame and what she had to say which was in essence the message of the programme:  the hurdle is money more than science.

I missed it, have you the title so I can look to find it.

I was reading about viruses recently, which are remarkable 'organisms' in their mutations.

If Certain strains of Ebola ever get the ability to be properly airborne we're in a world of trouble.

Phages were dismissed by English medicine in the 1930s cos penicillin was so easy n powerful then. The Soviets pushed on with Phage research and oddly, might have won the test tube race ! K

( Phages mutate just like virus' do )

Being pedantic :D, trees can only react by restricting the spread of fungi by creating chemical and physical barriers to contain (compartmentalise) it. Trees don't heal themselves, as such.

I actually told one 'very concerned girl' that I put a little anasthetic in the chain oil , to minimise the distress to the tree.......... am sad to say she did look pleased and told me how thoughtful I was. K
