Too slow...Big zip ties! I dunno why they pulled the first tree, maybe it was hung up. It's was just to illustrate the awesome power of the generic nylon webbing strap. Just another tool the the toolbox...when a stem splits, there will be a final fulcrum point somewhere further up, location unknown. The leverage close the the fulcrum will obviously be very powerful, but at the start of the split, the forces are weakest. Strong enough to kill though. Even a little 1" roof strap, with multiple winds, has phenomenal tensile strength. A lot of the stuff I do is solo, and pretty remote, EMS and hour and a half away or more, on a bad day.

Method statement plus risk assessment, if owt changes on the job re-evaluate and draw up a new plan that is safe and the agreeable to all on site.

so a method statement and risk assessment will stop things happening like the video at begining of this thread ? well i didnt know that, and then when its happened you draw up a new plan ? bit late shutting the stable door when the horse has gone, No paper work on this earth will stop accidents happening, shit happens and it always will do WE are all human and not one of us is perfect,

I’ve climbed trees that I’ve ratcheted together due to cracked unions but never had the need to fell a tree that needed ratcheting.

 

I felled a larch that had a dirty crack on the tension side of the tree which I planned to Ratchet but was advised not by an more experienced old boy saying the It could break it and send it flying in any direction.

 

Has this happened to anyone before ? I questioned it but took his advice and the tree came down perfectly so that’s how it was left
