Just now, Mick Dempsey said:

I disagree.

That's cool Mick .  Would not do for us all to be the same .  My comment should have been clearer . Each of us are/were  equally experienced  and some times the climber relies on the experienced geezer on the deck for guidance .

An example springs to mind ....Unashamedly topping out Black Pop on the tow path of the Chichester carnal ,  20 + trees , just leading up to the lock gates at Birdham .  The job was council but being paid for by Chichester Yacht Club  . Their view was from the other bank of the canal , across a car park and on to the club house .  Say 400 meters .  I needed to stand there . Hand signals were required to get all the buggers the same height .

Ok, I’ll enlarge.

The groundy has a difficult enough job to do anyway, asking him to stop, and move away from the tree, look at it from a couple of different angles, from a distance away, then make a decision that really should be the climbers job isn’t on imo.

Not set in stone, and on an odd occasion I’ll ask about one branch, but as a rule it’s down to the climber.

And then being asked by the climber to get a photo of him out on the tips....
