Looking to buy a 3mt horizontal log splitter.
Hope to get a tow able engine mounted one.
Any recommendations?
Thanks

Considering the 40t 3m Balfor splitter I saw on Facebook over the weekend was £18,500 I would be inclined to advise you to ring it up or use a shorter one and cut the lengths down. You’ll probably find very few logs will actually want to split down evenly in such a way that you get a processable piece. It’s hard enough with a 1m splitter. And at that price you could buy a fuelwood splitta 400 and get beautifully consistent logs.

I think you get far better consistency of split pieces by ringing and splitting with a vertical. You end with a lot of crappy pieces if you quarter and then process.

I would agree with the above. Did  1m billets one year and what happens is they dont slit down the middle but track out to one side quite a bit. One end is too thick and the other too thin. I guess it depends how neat logs you want but I went back to rings and vertical splitting for a quality product.

Have you considered a cone splitter ?   I have a  "Black cone splitter which I use to split lengths of cordwood up to 3MTRS long   up to    900mm diameter. It is a one man job, and you can stack the wood with the cone .To be honest it has  really made my  Uniforest23  and Binderberger 40 tonne redundant !!!!   If you Google "EXAC One  uk you can see the "Black  Cone splitter" on their  website

I would tend to agree with you ,but I find that once the wood has gone through the processor it looks ok and the advantages of the cone splitter, outweigh  the wood looking a bit messy /splintered/frayed. I admit I do get a bit more wastage if some cordwood is particularly splintered.

But we are all individuals and so  what  may be acceptable to one is not acceptable to another.

100% this - buy the fastest cycle time conventional splitter you can find -  or buy a larger processor as a decent roundwood splitter is a large investment and as others say - sell oversize as sawlogs. Over 10K to split a few oversize isn't viable - think about it.
