Not a miller personally, but have cut down plenty of Hawthorns in my time.  Can't see you'll find many that will provide you with any useful sized planks.  The bigger ones are generally heavily ridged and cracked in my experience.  As I said though im not a miller so probably talking out of my backside

Anyone have any experience of milling Hawthorn or know if it's worth doing.

if you can get a stem 12" or over that is of good form then i don't see why not.

to me everything is worth milling but then i am heavily biased as a wood species enthusiast.

to the best of my knowledge it will need lots of care during the drying process.

you can see pics of the timber here.

The one I looked at is about 14"-16" and about 6' long.

Not a great big piece but as I'll be on-site milling an Oak,

thought it might be worth saving from the firewood pile.

That’s a good size and worth milling. Hawthorn will make good carving wood, and will turn nicely too. It is pretty featureless though.

Sounds worthwhile to me, not often you come across them that size. nothing ventured, nothing gained, seems like a bit too much effort on the trees behalf, growing for a century to turn into a couple of nights burning?

As you're there anyway, why not mill it?
