Forwarders on the road

Looking at forwarders for a up coming job and seems you can get a fair bang for buck from purpose built but your not aloud on the road with it. Why can't you bang a set of idicators on them and toddle up the road yet it's acceptable to stick it on a Lowloader behind a ropey old fastrac

There is nothing to stop you registering one as an "ag machine" and trundling down the road with it. As with anything ag there are restrictions like no motorways, 360 flashing lights on dual carriageways  and max speeds . I move one for a guy on occasion and they are a ballache on the low loader because of the height ( 16` all up on my setup) , journey needs planning a bit around bridges etc but thats nothing to the tree damage caused once you start beating your way down overgrown country lanes to a site .

I've seen it done but it's not commonly done.

I think if you  register it  as an AMV then get it's free tax and then insure it your most of the way there.  Next issues would be lights, mirrors.  Speed rating on the tyres might be an issue and in my deep dark memory i seem to remember about steering on the minisicks being an issue.  This could be why all the forwards i've seen on the road are Old Valmets and Rottnes .

Might be worth a phonecall to someone in the FCA.  If anyone will know the 100% answer it will be them

Its really not a problem, you can register any plant and machinery to go on the road. I have seen registered road rollers, tracked excavators , tracked dumpers, wheeled dumpers, cranes and the list just goes on. The most important thing is safety, it really does need to steer and stop. Lights etc are not that important and for daytime use not obligatory but if you fit them they must work  https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/daytime-running-lights/daytime-running-lights

All the old FC machines were road registered as, technically, an FC road is the Queen's Highway and therefore all vehicles need to be road legal.  If you're using a vehicle in the wood (FC woods) this is still the case, needs to be taxed, insured and MOT'd.  The FC machines aren't registered anymore, but they definitely used to be, not sure what's changed in this.

I've escorted a forwarder up the road in the past when I worked for FC as a student - one van in front, one van behind, radio contact between the vans and the machine telling the driver to pull over if traffic was needing passed (in either direction).  Not a beacon or hi-vis vest in site but that was a few years ago now.  The main draw-back with a purpose built machine is the speed to move it.  If you're going any distance at all it is painfully slow.
