Transit tipper ram problem

Hi, was hoping someone might be able to help.

My 2012 tipper has been getting weaker now it struggles to tip a full load up past the 4th ram of 5.

Was thinking maybe changing the fluid might help?

How is the best way to do this? with the tipper bed down?

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

have ya checked the hydraulic oil level?

If it's something that's been getting worse. it could be oils levels, fluid leaking past the seals in the ram etc. It could also be on the electrical side with poor earths/connections not providing enough power to lift the load. Try cleaning the connections up before getting to involved, the pump and electrics are normally sited such that that get covered in road spray and rust.

Thanks for the replies.

Checked the fluid level and that's fine.

Where is the pressure relief valve and how do i adjust it?

Also forgot to say if the tipper is left up it does slowly come down on it's own which makes me think like you said Gary could be fluid leaking past the seals which sounds like a job I couldn't do.

Will give it all a clean but don't think it's electrical as the ram is making the noise to work.

Thanks again for the response

It's normally by the spool near the solenoid.

It's not too bad a job, just a matter of removing the ram and dismantling it to replace the piston seal.

First you need to establish the reason. You can pressure check the pump by removing the connection from the ram and putting a gauge there, if the pressure doen't rise when the relief valve is adjusted the pump is worn.  To check if the ram seals are leaking you'll need to put a tap in the line but as most rams are single acting a leaking piston seal normally means oil is seen leaking from the ram.
