Yep time serts far Better than  helicoils,

would never buy a helicoil,if you were closer to me I have a full set from worth .

Had the saw in, the helicoils the OP had fitted were OK and holding strong. Inserts are OK if there is a lot of land around the hole but not so good if there isn't. Helicoils are generally a good repair but do use solid inserts on plug holes.

The carb had a small piece of random rubber, probably from the fuel/impulse line stuck in the impulse holes in the carb and should be running fine now.

Thanks for the recommendations for the time serts, I'll bear them in mind in case I ever need to do any thread repair work in future.
I did find the helicoils quite a struggle to get in, really fiddly. Obviously worse since they were only M5. But anyway they are holding strong so hopefully they've done the trick.
After Spuds work on the saw it now runs like a dream. It's an animal in fact cutting through timber!
