Another wanting to change careers

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm looking to get into tree surgery and any advice would be hugely appreciated. I'm 37 and have been a warehouse manager for some years at a huge distribution site. I have recently left the role due to not wanting to work shifts, weekends and generally not being stuck in a big tin shed for my whole career. I would love to get into tree surgery and would just like some thoughts on how realistic it would be in my circumstance. Even though my work doesn't include much physical activity I am an active guy who trains and competes in Kickboxing and I am certainly not afraid of hard work. Unfortunately I do not have any real experience in this kind of work though.

I plan on taking a couple of courses at Sparshot College. I see a lot of the jobs on Arbjobs require CS30, CS31, CS38 AND CS39. I can afford to do a couple of these courses this year and was hoping I could do more when employed already. In what order should I get these or do I really need all 4 before I start?

I am prepared to start on a much lower wage than I have been on for some time but I do have a mortgage and kids so I can only drop down so far. In my situation and possibly with a couple of courses under my belt, how likely am I to be able to get a job and roughly what kind of pay should I expect?

I look forward to receiving any advice as this is something I have wanted to do for a long time. As long as I am employable and can earn enough to pay the bills I am eager to get started asap.

Many thanks

Shaun

Hi Shaun. You’re not too old if you’re fit and keen. It won’t be an easy transition in terms of keeping cash flow coming in as you change but I’m sure you will have planned for this.
Where abouts In Hampshire are you ?

Hi, I have planned to earn a lot less than I have been but it's hard to plan to earn a wage when you have no idea what it may be. I am in Andover and have a car/clean licence.

Ok , you’re not a million miles from me. I’m based in Haslemere, Surrey and sometimes get work in between our locations. Do you want to pm me with your contact details and if I need help over that way I can sound you out in the future and see if you are free ?

You seem to have thought it through a bit Shaun.

It will be a while before you’re worth much more than £20k PAYE.

Get 30 31 38 and maybe chipper. Then try and get with a company that will give you some easy trees to learn on and if they like you hopefully they'll put you through some more climbing. Trailer licence is always a good qual to have too. But do bear in mind it takes at least 3 years to be anywhere near a decent climber. Best of luck.
