My renewal stayed the same with Arbirisk but with some rediculous terms added.
Their underwriter (Aviva) now insist with no negotiation if you're parked out front with the chipper hitched on & working in the back garden you must have a Wheel Clamp on the chipper for it to be covered.
Same goes for anything on wheels which affects work in my opinion.

Their argument was if you want your gear insured & covered then you won't mind.
My counter argument was if I make it that un-nickable then I don't need your insurance...

They said the theft of chippers is going down with their new policy. I said great so that means it'll be getting cheaper then? They said Nooooooo.... emoji1.png

Doesnt sound unreasonable to me...otherwise an opportunist can easily lift it off hitch and off they go...

The chipper is chained to the truck & the truck has an immobiliser with the chip in the key.

Yes same here but they say both chipper and truck get pinched at same time so requires a wheel clamp

I thought if it was locked to the truck i.e with a chain and lock this would cover you? I’ll have to check my policy.

It’s depressing to think that they want you to make your equipment completely unnickable meaning extra work for you meanwhile they are upping the costs and having less to payout due to lack of claims. There must come a point where people just say it’s not worth having tool insurance at all. I think maybe some sort of protest may be in order haha.

Fair enough, I do have a wheel clamp but hardly ever use it on site...tbh most of the time I would have chipper in sight or if not sight will be blocked in by vehicle where possible, if it cant be blocked and I cant see it then I would clamp it.

I’m not convinced insurance is worth it on smaller value items . Surely if you have many years no claims you can more or less afford to insure yourself. For example I have had ifor Williams trailers for 10 years- never bothered insuring them, last year one got nicked for the first time, PITA for sure, but actually still not sure if I had paid insurance for the last 10 years I’d have been better off against juat buying another trailer and spending a bit more making it more secure.

another thing I phoned Trust after the trailer theft and asked them about what it’d require to be covered and they said it needs to be in a locked compound!! What a joke- glad I hadn’t wasted money paying them over the years.

They specify that being secured to a vehicle with a chain is NOT acceptable & it MUST be a wheel clamp.

I did ask "what is the definition of a wheel clamp?" to which he replied: "Something that stops the wheel turning".

So I said if I came up with something that fits to the chipper & stops the wheel turning would that be OK? The reply was to take a photo & send it to them so they can show the underwriter.

I was thinking along the lines of the bike locks that are fixed to the frame & go thru the spokes. Or some form of axle lock....

I was told chain etc is fine when truck and chipper in view. I.e front garden etc if in rear garden and its not in view it needs a wheel clamp

Hi Guys,

Who is everyone using for plant cover? (Just on a Timberwolf 230.)

I am currently using trust but my premium has gone up from £350 to £500 + for no reason so wondering if anyone is offering a more competitive price.

Policy I currently have is new for old.

Thanks

I am with Trust Insurance and they were the best for me last year.

But I added a Mini Chipper (Greenmech CS100) to my insurance  and a Top Handle Chainsaw and they have told me that my insurance will be going up as they now class me as a tree surgeon .... Which is strange as I am not a qualified tree surgeon (IE in rope work and full on climbing) and technically don't do that sort of work. I am more Grounds maintenance and what I am doing is still all covered in my current insurance policy.

The Baby Top Handle Chainsaw and the mini chipper is for hedge reduction where you really don't want a two handled chainsaw when toping out a hedge and the mini wood chipper is for waste issues as the local tip no longer wants large amounts of green waste.

But regardless Trust Insurance are saying that they are moving everyone who uses a chainsaw to a tree surgeon policy that will cover ground maintenance tasks (ie Grass Cutting, Hedge Trimming, Decking, Patios ect)... I think that it is really an excuse to just bump up peoples premiums.

I do mostly Grounds maintenance and this year I added a Greenmech CS100 small chipper to deal with waste from mostly hedge reductions and the odd bit of unwanted branch pruning. This is also a small part of my business but Trust have said that at renewal it will mean that my insurance will have to change to full arborist / tree surgeon insurance even though that is not what my business is based on.. The premiums will also be going up as well... I am also told be Trust that anything that involves chainsaws are going to be on full arborist insurance regardless  of the business..

I have had over 20-years of business and have never claimed on my business insurance and only had one windscreen claim on my car insurance since  in the same period... I do get feed up with them saying 'but you are high risk' Really...
