Are these Beech trees on the way out?

As per the title. We are up in the NE of Scotland. Trees are quite a bit older than their height suggests as they’re in an in exposed site. Normally quite a damp area (marsh grass evident) but heavy clay ground cracking up after the prolonged dry spell.

Might these trees rejuvenate next spring or do you reckon these are done for?

Your grass is still green so I doubt it .  Everything is brown down here .

proberbly not, all beech and sycamore round here all brown and dropping leaves there just shutting down one large syc was sheddind its leaves about 3 wk ago it now nearly bare,

The current conditions are unusual but not unprecedented. Have these trees lived through similar dry conditions in the last few decades? Yes. Did they survive? Well, obviously yes. Will they do it again? Almost certainly. They might even flush again this year if we get some decent rain. Is thre any risk in waiting till next spring?

Don’t think it has been as dry as this for a long time. A well in my garden which normally refills from empty within an hour (submersible pump emptying recently to renew old clay pipe work) is merely wet at the bottom. Old locals have never not seen it flowing from the outlet.

They now suspect that my pipe works have sabotaged their access to water downstream [emoji3]

Wilt everywhere now- unless this is as sly post to get yr hands on some nice 'dead' firewood. I miss the Beech down here. Not many on clay. K
