Very nice. What's the wildlife activity like with your new pond?

Thanks. Got plenty of invertebrates (smooth newts, frogs) but the heron comes around and there are a couple of ducks who are often on it, so I expect they're tucking in. Lots of insect life which attracts swallows (or swifts, or possible martins) which are amazing to watch. We've been seeing a barn owl hunting in the field too and I expect there are plenty of voles in the banks where they've collapsed (as they're supposed to). No fish yet but I expect they'll find their way in eventually, unless them coming in on ducks' feet is a myth.

You've actually got frogs. That's good news. Sounds like its making a difference to the biodiversity. Great project.

Me wee pond only 25m away, and overgrown with rushs, is already "hooching" wi frogs and frogspawn, so I will allow nature to works things out on her own.

Cheers

I think if I am not mistaken, the carp eat the spawn, though I could be wrong. We have a lot of carp in our pond and probably the old crayfish too. This may or may not be why we have no frogs.

Yup, and I kinda suspect the brown trout would hoover up the frogspawn or the  tadpoles?

Get a 5 litre water bottle.
Cut the top off, flip it and attach to the bottom with a few cable ties or metal wire.
Drop any old piece of meat in.
(And a rock)
Attach a rope and leave overnight in the water.
If you've got crayfish, they'll be in the bottle.
Repeat for 3-6 months to be sure.
They taste amazing too!

Okay. will give it a go. I know we have them as I have seen coming out of the water. I think probably it is the non-native crayfish that has ended up in our pond. But I will try out the 5 litre bottle trick.

I think you still need a licence to trap crayfish. Worth reading up on the rules especially trap design to prevent other animals drowning.

Get permission or a licence to trap crayfish, eels, elvers, salmon, sea trout, lamprey and smelt: how to apply and...
